KITCHEN WITCHES CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS

Please note – these are only guidelines.  If you like the look of a character but don’t fit in the age range or physical description, come along and audition anyway!!!

Dolly Biddle - 40 - 50 - little cherub of a woman, prone to be overweight but always going at top speed.   She indulges herself with anything life has to offer whenever possible - even if it's not good for her - and her creative imagination knows no bounds.  She is intensely proud of her son Stephen, loves to dispense advice along with recipes of cabbage rolls and borscht and haets Isobel Lomax with an intensity usually reserved for detonating nuclear devices.

Stephen Biddle – 20 – 30 – a nervous, prematurely balding but decent young man who actually enjoys producing low-budget cable TV shows, even when it’s his Mum who’s the star.  He is bright and capable, if somewhat shy, but always reluctant to confront Dolly on her many shortcomings.  He’s not a fighter – he’d rather be a lover, but nobody’s asked him yet.

Isobel Lomax – 40-50 – thinks Martha Stewart could learn something about homemaking from her.  She trained at the Cordon Bleu and enjoyed a successful career, including her own show “Busy Izzy”.  Isobel likes people to think she has a much classier background than reality supports, and always wears the correct accessories. At heart, she is bright, funny and articulate woman who has come to terms with the choices she made early in life.

Rob the Camera Person (could be Male or Female – any age) – Rob tends to dress in a somewhat Goth fashion – possibly with tattoos and multiple piercings – Stephen is a little afraid of Rob.  Rob cleans up the sets, resets props, carries the portable camera around during the show and is generally extremely efficient and precise.  Rob is probably the most sensible person in the show.  (Has only 1 line – will be helping with the back stage crew work.)

KITCHEN WITCHES PLOT SUMMARY

Isobel Lomax and Dolly Biddle are two "mature" cable-access cooking show hostesses who have hated each other for 30 years, ever since Larry Biddle dated one and married the other. When circumstances put them together on a TV show called The Kitchen Witches, the insults are flung harder than the food! Dolly's long-suffering TV-producer son Stephen tries to keep them on track, but as long as Dolly's dressing room is one inch closer to the set than Isobel's, it's a losing battle, and the show becomes a rating smash as Dolly and Isobel top both Martha Stewart and Jerry Springer!

Kitchen Witches opens on 13 July, and runs for 7 performances until 3 August.    KW only performs on Saturday & Sundays, and all performances start at 6pm.

Plot summary:

Hugh Whitemore’s classic play is a powerfully moving, fictional account of the events leading up to the arrest of Peter and Helen Kroger( two Americans living in a London suburb who were convicted of spying for the Russians and sentenced to twenty years imprisonment.) The action centres on the quietly respectable and totally unsuspecting Jackson household - Bob, Barbara and daughter Julie who live opposite the Krogers and consider them their closest friends. When an MI5 official arrives suddenly and coerces the Jackson into allowing their house to be used as a surveillance post their decent, happy life is shattered as they are plunged into a sordid, alien world of deceit and intrigue while gradually learning the truth about their much loved and trusted friends. Eventually Barbara reaches breaking point in the agonising realisation that the Krogers have betrayed her and she has betrayed the Krogers.

Plot summary

On a foggy night, Michael Starkwedder enters the home of the Warwicks through a window in the study. He finds the dead body of Richard Warwick, and finds Warwick's wife, Laura, holding a gun that supposedly killed him. Despite the murder being obvious, and overwhelming evidence pointing towards it, Starkwedder does not believe she killed him, and she soon tells him she's innocent. The two decide to place the blame on an enemy from the past, MacGregor, a man whose son was run over by Richard while he was drunk. As the story progresses, the two fake the fact that they were just finding out about the murder, and others in the house were introduced. It is revealed Laura was having an affair due to Richard's cruel nature, and was vouching for the man she was cheating with when she claimed to have killed Richard. But there are other suspects as well - Warwick's mother, his simple half-brother, the sinister Angell or the apparently goody-goody Miss Bennett. The real murderer could be anyone!
